One of the things that I find interesting is the that many of the word and terms that we use everyday have a basis in Swedish or come from the same root. This is particularly evident when listening to high brow discussions or reading a dissertation, where the subject may be politics, philosophy or art. As an an artist I find this extremely important.
On a more mundane level I notice that one one gets to grips with the phonetics and sound of the language it is also interesting. For example swollen in swedish is enflé. Pronounced you can almost hear the word inflamed.
Another example is where metaphor is used. In traditional fine art etching a technique know as á la poupée where ink is applied to the printing plat with a tool that looks like an old fashioned doll.
I would like to add that with the availability of computers and high speed internet there are some great new ways to learn Swedish, including this site. But also there are some good text to speech plugins and software. The ones I use are specifically for Mac: Infovox. Altough not 100% accurate, they do help to put the sound of the word/phrase in ones head. This is important as the aural nature of learning and comprehension is vital. There is also a pretty good Swedish/English dictionary called Ultralingua. Setting these up with hot keys on the keyboard or spare buttons on the mouse is the trick. Being able to trigger the features quickly that these softwares offer is the key to them being an aid to learning.
Lastly if anybody is using the latest version of the Safari browser, the new Reader feature is another big step. In overlays the page that you are reading and puts just the text on a white background, laid out neatly like in a book, in the same size font every time. Ideal for reducing eye strain.
